2008 Estancia Pinot Noir
The Estancia 2008 Pinot Noir Monterey County Pinnacles Ranches is a very smooth and accomplished Pinot Noir. Although it hails from Northern California and not Oregon or Washington, this vintage was fine. It has much more tannin than the 2008 Clos du Bois North Coast Pinot I reviewed last month (and really liked), but not as much as a cabernet. To go along with the tannins there is a solid taste of berries that follows through and does not get lost. I can’t tell you what sort of berries these are, sorry. The wine finishes off very well without anything bad popping up. This is a very well balanced pinot.
This wine costs between $14.00 and $18.00 depending on sales and is widely available. This particular vintage works well at the price point if you don’t want to spend more on a pinot from farther north where they grow really well year in and year out. I can’t say that it is a bargain, since you get what you pay for here, but getting what you pay for when buying wine is an achievement in and of itself.
